Sketching Wired

We thought it might be fun to show you our last 3 Wired editorial pieces … as well as their extremely humble beginnings. Some artists spend a great deal of time getting their sketches just right in order to save time on the final piece – concentrating on small details at the end, and in turn wrapping it up quicker. Us? Well, our early conceptual stages involve paper, pencil, a scanner and around 2 minutes. Our goal is to quickly convey our thoughts on composition, perspective and balance. Then of course we anxiously wait for the fun part to happen after our editor says “Go!”

All illustrations are featured in the ‘TEST: Burning Question’ section each month.

Dolorean: “How Do I Future-Proof My Digital Media?”
Trees: “How Do I Make My GPS Better?”
Man: “Why Don’t I Have Wireless Internet Everywhere?”

is that guy with the “star” and “sky” split screen drawing using or influenced by Anselm Kiefers “Falling Stars”? Cause that’s amazing, here’s a link, my favorite piece of art:

I am assuming when you show an editor such a basic sketch, they already have an idea of what the final style will be? Or do you show them previously completed images to give them an idea of the style.

Since we’ve been working in this section, the style and direction has evolved a bit – I think we are at a point now where the evolution is complete and the look is roughly the same each month.

Thanks for posting the process. It’s always nice to see a little more than the finished piece. :0) Is it wrong that I want to see Michael J. Fox riding in that Dolorean? Nice work, guys.
