Read Between The Leading

We’re excited to be interviewed next week on the Read Between The Leading podcast. Today they asked us if we’d like to accept questions from our blog and Twitter followers, so we kindly said yes and thank you. Please drop us a comment here or a reply on Twitter and (hopefully) we’ll get to as many as possible. Before you start asking questions, we’ll get the big one out of the way: Yes, but only once.

You have had four grammy nominations as a “firm,” and I believe many more nominations to come, but besides winning a grammy, what do you guys see as one of your top goals in producing art?

In the past few years, there have been a ton of freelance designers and new studios seemingly popping up everywhere. Some are truly talented and deliver a solid product, while others do low quality work for lesser costs.
In your early years in design, how did you deal with competition from other designers/studios/firms on a day-to-day basis while still trying to establish a name for yourselves?

I would like to know a bit about the your client process in the art direction stage. With concepts involving a decent scale photo-shoot, plenty of post production and even a third party photographer, how much conversation do you have with a client before putting much work into the idea? How to you convince the client to buy in to the concept without having the execution finished? Sketches? Verbal explanation?
Thanks!

Hey dudes! In light of the record industry going down the pooper, where do you see album art heading? Have you noticed any trends since you first started doing album art compared to now (is business slower, are you doing more design for digital applications than print, etc)
Cheers,
Jolby

Hey Ryan and Don, you’ve collected tons of designer toys, figures and books. What would you say is the most unique collection that you have within or outside the studio walls?

I was wondering with all the illustration/photo work that you do how important to the process if at all is a tablet input device such as a wacom tablet like the intuos 4 to your studio. do you use this device only for certain purposes/situations or is it used over a mouse on a daily basis. cant wait for the interview im a big fan of your work.

How does the fact that you guys are brothers affect the social dynamic of your day to day work? Do you think being related creates a unique synergy? Do you ever just get sick of each other?
